Could you check the quality of the question, Please?

................. that engineers do not restrict themselves to technical matters.

A) The engineering curriculum has long required
B) Many potential leaders were of the opinion
C) The courses involved substantial reading and writing assignments
D) The aim was to attract a wider audience
E) He acquired a sophisticated knowledge of scientific and technical matters


"A" is the suggested correct answer. " Ok., but I found the question a little awkward; It looks like it was composed by someone who isn't a native of English or doesn't have a great command of English.what do you think? To say, is the question a gualified one for a nationwide ELT Profiency exam?

I think A is the only answer, and the phrasing of the sentence seems OK to me. But let's wait for more opinions. EDIT: Nona's seen it too, it must be OK.

I probably would have picked B for grammatical correctness. I don't like the inclusion of 'do' if the answer is to be A. "The curriculum requires that they not restrict..." sounds better to me. Someone might argue that for B, 'do' would have to be 'did', but I don't think so.

Oh, I just felt B was long-winded or pretentious, what with "potential leaders" being interviewed and so on. But I see your point about it being imaginable.

However, I would modify that at least to:

I can see that, too, Nona.

But the B statement, as it stands, does not seem ungrammatical to me; it simply suggests that the opinion of the potential leaders (in my scenario) is expressed on the question of their general perception of what engineers do or do not do, not on what engineers should do.
