Could you check our conversation, please?

This is just a conversation with my friend. It could be a real talk or text message. I don't want it to sound like an essay, diary or any (official) writings. I just want it to sound like conversations in real life just like lines from movies so I didn't change some orders for questions and didn't put in commas before 'because', 'so' or 'and' on purpose, because people usually doesn't speak long sentences at once like in novels and text books. They use short sentences and link simple words. I would be glad if you would check my basic grammar and vocabulary as real talks.=) Thank you very much.

Me: Hey, have you ever had a mental illness?

Friend: Umm. Just depression. It was severe depression.

Me: The doctor said so or it is just your own opinion?

Friend: The doctor did. When my girl friend died and it's when I was 18. I told you before.

Me: Has it lasted until now? And yeah, of course I know it.

Friend: It was very serious and I've still had the depression. Cause this is life. It's bad. I think eveybody has a depression their own. And of course you do, too.

Me: Hey, have you ever wanted any brothers or sisters?

Friend: I always want. My mom was pregnant when I was a child but the baby died. Because of a terror attack. You know my father is a soldier, so we lived in a dangerous city. And she never wanted babies after that. But my father now has a child between his new wife.

Me: Ah, this is first time.

Friend: No, I told you.

Me: Nope. I know about your father, which he is married another woman and has a child. Only these.

I agree but this is just a conversation with my friend. Don't be serious. We've been talking about a lot of things and I just took a part from those. And I'm sorry I forgot some sentences in the middle. Here is the sentences I missed in bold.

Why can't I use 'a' with depression in this sentence? I used "have 'a' depression" in the first line.
