Could you check my question?

Hi teachers,
The context:
The old president wanted to change things in this country, but he couldn’t. The police and the army stopped him. And the new President, of course, is a good friend of the police and the army. A very good friend.’ Alex laughed angrily.
Did Alex say if the new president had good relations with the police and the army?
Explain your answer using reported speech.
Yes, he did. He said (that) the new president was a good friend of them.

Thanks in advance.
