Could you check my paragraph

This was very difficult to write, especially choosing tenses. Please correct any mistakes.

A few days ago, on a website, I came across a flag with a place name and a lot of people's names on it, and I noticed it had belonged to a unit in a war and also they all had been from a village that is not so far from my great-grand father's one. That was really surprising. He'd died on a warship in the war. Now I believe that his name is still in the sea. I wish I could see it, at least.
