Could you check a sentence

Hi,

Could you tell me if you have any problem with any of the following sentences, please?

1. The messenger left and it wasn't until after eight days that the news began to sink in

2. The news didn't begin to sink in until eight days after the messenger went away

3. It wasn't until eight days had passed after the messanger was gone that the news began to sink in

4. It wasn't until eight days after the messenger left that the news began to sink in

You missed a period!

They're all okay by me except the long one, #3. You misspelled "messenger."

I suppose it's technically okay. They all have prepositional phrases within prepositional phrases.

In #4, the form "until X" is clear. X = "eight days after the messenger left."
In #3 it's a bit tough to parse.

How far could you go with something like this?

Perhaps the thing that makes it awkward is that the objects of the prepositions are clauses.

3. It wasn't until eight days had passed after the messanger was gone that the news began to sink in.

Here's the specific problem with this.

'The messenger was gone' describes a state/condition, not a point in time. eg

The messenger left on Tuesday,.

This means that on Wednesday he was gone.

This means that on Thursday he was gone.
