I would add that in the U.S. (not sure about Britain) we would usually say "Where is the restroom/Men's room/Ladies' room?" (in a store or restaurant) or "Where is the the bathroom?" (in someone's home).

My British supervisor didn't use the word "toilet" as well.
She used to ask "Where's the loo?" or "Where's the ladies?" (without "room"), and used to refer to men's room as "gents'", so if she had been a man I guess she'd have asked "Where's the gents?"
