Could this be written better?

Ever since the antecedents of Positivism, namely, Plato’s Phaedrus 245a, Symposium 209; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre-Simon_Laplace’s (1749–1827) and Wilhelm Dilthey's (1833-1911) differentiating between the humanities and the natural science, positivism as being principle to the scientific method is a consequence of Auguste Comte's (1798-1857) criticising of the metaphysical and normative as being too speculative, emotive and romantic.

You probably mean "principal" rather than "principle", but the whole sentence is so tortured that it is hard to be sure of anything. I think you need to look again at the overall structure.
