Could this be better in speech?
Bear in mind that the speaker is mature and that it's set in the 1950's:
'If we leave Portsmouth on the 7th of July we should be in Paris by the end of the week. It's safe to assume that French trains are slower than G.W.R. ones.'

Can we put it this way? "If we left Portsmouth on the 7th July we should have been in Paris by the end of the week."?
