"They want him badly - dead or alive." is correct.

A question from this would be something like:

X: "How much do they want him?"
Y: "Very badly, either alive or dead."

Hi Clive,
Thank you for your reply.
Explanations for your question could be
a) How do they really want him?
b) How do they want him very much?
c) How do they need or want him?

Is that so?

Hi,

I don't know what you mean here by explanations for your question.

Question A is OK, but B and C are not natural.

Clive don't know what you mean here by explanations for your question.
Hi Clive,
What I meant was if 'a', 'b', and 'c' could be explanations to your suggested question.
After your reply I can see that only 'a' works, 'How do they really want him?'
Thank you.
