this was an assigment from class in which I was expected to write an essay after reading an article "Hihg School's Secret Life" and put my thoughts on this essay.... could someone take a look an correct any errors?

Thoughts on “High School’s Secret Life”

I think that cliques and social groups are a big part of our society. We can find cliques in almost any environment, not only on high schools and colleges but also in the workplace. We as humans tend to form cliques or social groups for just about anything. Cliques are a way for humans to bond with each other. People form cliques for different reasons similar interest, status, social class, or sometimes is because you know the same people for so long that is just natural to form a group. But in my opinion most of the cliques are form based on identity. People look for way to identify themselves, so they join groups with similar interest and behaviors.

A clear example of these groups is the Jocks and the Goths. The Jocks are very male oriented group involved in sports and acting as though guys. On the other hand you have the Goths who pretty much represent the contrary. They tend to think that they are vampires. Either way groups sometimes make the individual loose his own identity for the identity of the group, or in some cases the identity of the group leader that is imposing on everyone else. While reading this article I did a bit of research and found a couple of concepts that were quite interesting about cliques and social groups. One is “The Convergence Theory,” which says that group behavior is not a product of the group itself but it is dictated in the group by certain individuals; therefore, individuals converge into groups depending on their ideas and interest. The other concept that I came across was the “Clique Negative Effect,” which is the effect of an exclusive group of people to evaluate negatively the behaviors of the person they dislike.

Another good point that the author mention is the two important roles within a clique, and that role is of the Queen Bee and the Outcast. The Queen Bee is usually beautiful, graceful, and manipulative at the same time, charismatic. The Queen Bee dictates who belongs in the groups and who doesn’t. The Outcast is the person who is rejected from the group and is subject to insults to a point where they are taunted, harassed, embarrassed, and degraded every single day. These behaviors, to which the outcast is subject to, can develop very serious psychological problems over time.
