This is an informative essay over the atomic bomb, i have not attached the bibliography.
Conflict between humans has always occurred throughout the course of human history, caused mainly by the desire to gain resources, and has evolved as new technologies arise. It is loved by historians because they have “clearly delineated beginnings and middles and ends.”(Meyer) However, within the last few decades, the human race has gained the ability to be completely wiped out at the whim of a leader. This has been attributed to the invention of atomic bombs, and with it, nuclear warfare. This paper will explore the history, application, and the advancement of the atomic bomb in a interesting and informative manner. The atomic bomb is one of the most famous and controversial inventions of World War II, and it is a weapon as fascinating as it is deadly. After the discovery of nuclear fission in 1938, it became possible to begin the development of devices that could harness this power. Nuclear fission is the breaking apart of isotopes belonging to heavy elements such as Uranium-235. This isotope is found in natural uranium, but in very small quantities, approximately .7 % of natural material. For use in weapons, the uranium must be enriched to more than 90% Uranium-235.(Nave) This enrichment is achieved by gaseous diffusion and this method has been used since the Manhattan Project. It consists of various stages of gas containing containers and with each stage of the uranium passing through a membrane, leaving behind the less enriched uranium, the user comes closer to having pure Uranium-235.(Uranium) The process of nuclear fission is not to be confused with the process of nuclear fusion, which consists of a Uranium-235 isotope catching a slow isotope and becoming increasingly unstable until it bursts, releasing a large amount of energy.(Nave) In 1940 after Albert Einstein persuaded Franklin D. Roosevelt to allot a meager sum of $6,000 dollars to harnessing nuclear fission for military use. The “Manhattan Project” as it would come to be known, would be allotted a gross sum of 2 billion dollars by the end of its commission.(Manhattan) After 5 years of development two main ways to create a nuclear detonation had been devised; the gun type assembly method and the implosion assembly method. The first atom bomb was detonated as a test on July 16th, 1945 (Bellis), and used the implosion type method which consisted of concentrated explosions around a plutonium atom which causes an atomic blast. This type was later dropped on Japan along with a gun type assembly bomb that smashes two unstable atom cores together to cause an atomic blast. The amount of destruction created by the bombs was enormous. In the detonation of gun-type bomb Little Boy above Hiroshima, 80,000 people died instantly with many more dying from radioactive contamination, while in Nagasaki 70,000 people died instantly from the implosion type bomb Fat Man. This signaled the beginning of a new age and its invention has had a resounding impact on the modern world and international relations. The atomic bomb has had a profound impact on how the modern world operates today. Its detonation over the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima changed the landscape of politics and international relations forever. One of its most direct effects was its decisive role in ending World War II in the pacific theatre, after both Little Boy and Fat Man were dropped on Japan, inflicting massive casualties, Japan declared its unconditional surrender, fearing further attacks.(Japan accepts) Another huge effect was its role in sparking the nuclear age and the Cold War against the Soviet Union. Surprisingly enough, the fear surrounding the capabilities of the bomb arguably saved the United States from going to war with the USSR in what would essentially be an all out brawl for the world. Having mutually assured destruction at the hands of atomic bombs greatly deterred both sides form starting a direct offensive.(Bowen) Because one of the major factors that kept the Cold War cold was the atomic bomb, it can indirectly be accredited to the many changes that happened as a result of the idea clash between the USSR and the United States. Advancements to many technologies have been made at an alarming rate in the 20th and 21st centuries, and the destructive capabilities of the atom bomb have not been an exception. There have been two main types of nuclear weapons created. The aforementioned atom bomb, and thermonuclear weapons, more commonly known as hydrogen bombs. Hydrogen bombs are much more powerful than atomic bombs, because they split many more atoms in a reaction than an atomic bomb, drastically increasing effectiveness. This is achieved by having an implosion type atom bomb, but within the sample of the unstable element is hydrogen gas.(Pappas) Normally, this would create a normal atomic explosion, but it is exponentially amplified by that hydrogen gas because “The high temperatures and pressures created by the plutonium-239 fission cause the hydrogen atoms to fuse. This fusion process releases neutrons, which feed back into the plutonium-239, splitting more atoms and boosting the fission chain reaction.” (Pappas) This makes the bomb capable of being “3,800 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima”(Pandey) Obviously, hydrogen bombs are much scarier than their predecessor, but also very mysterious because it has never actually been detonated in a malicious matter, only for intimidation, away from human populations. One advantage, over the conventional atom bomb is that it produces far less radioactive fallout after detonation. The hydrogen bomb has become the most powerful nuclear weapon, and at the time of this report, it has had a significant impact on the already soured international relations between the United States and North Korea, with North Korea claiming its first successful test of a hydrogen bomb in early 2016 to the disapproval of most western nations.
