Could someone make the difference clear between the following sentences, please

Hi there teachers, 

1). He is studying a lot, for he has exams next month. 

2). He is studying. 

Could someone please tell me the difference in the meaning of the two statements?

The part I have underlined. The second sentence simply doesn't tell us why he is studying or how much effort he's putting into it. Absent context, it just tells us what he's doing at the moment.
