Could someone look at my Grapes Of Wrath Rhetoric Essay?

How Much Horsepower Does a Tractor Have?

Not everybody has the luxury of being able to stay in the comfort of their hometown for their whole life. Quite frankly, it's obviously proven in the novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Coming to California as an “Oakie” is one of the toughest transitions to go through, due to the overload of segregation coming from the natives there. Steinbeck shows how thousands of families travel over from the east coast and find the brutal truth of how life is like in California. He shows this effectively by giving many of these people a voice and by putting a tag of shame on the Californian citizens for how poorly they are treating the newcomers, in particular, the Joads. It was properly portrayed how the vast majority of the migrants were voiceless and objectified as a mass of people which made it hard to identify or feel empathy for them.

The settlers and landowners of California at this time were ruthless. Jobs were scarce, land was limited, and colonists were the farthest away from being considered friendly. Many of the wealthiest residents used capitalism, making a long pyramid of social classes and for it to be extremely arduous to ever so slightly climb up in ranks. “What do you want us to do? We can't take less share of the crop – we're half starved now. The kids are hungry all the time. We got no clothes, torn an' ragged. If all the neighbors weren't the same, we'd be ashamed to go to meeting”(Pg. ). It’s explained here that the tenant farmers are trying to atone with the landowners about how little they’re receiving as pay. They try to point out that there’s not much money for a typical family living situation and that it can’t possibly be the family's fault for moving across the country to work there.
