Historical Background :
In this part of the assignment , we are going to analyse the background of the soap opera in Argentina during 1976 to 1995 ;in order to understand the role and performance of the characters.
From 1976 to 1981
Jorge Rafael Videla Redondo, was the fact President of Argentina. His standards as a fact leader made him assumed authority, regardless of whether by lawful, or constitutional means. During this period, a Dirty War broke out. His program of a state called the National Reorganization Process consisted on the Operation Condor lead by himself with Roberto Viola . Then , it was in charged of Leopoldo Galtieri made up for the illegal arrest, torturing, killing or forced disappearance of domestic citizens who were in response to strikes , social unrest, that is claimed to threaten a country's stability.
At the beginning of the soap opera, we could see this historical fact when the voiced over defined as a wildtrack personified by Alberto Lombardo a doctor who was in charge of an illegal arrest institution, read a newspaper in which it appeared “ Se re abren causas de Desaparecidos , el juez en lo federal y Penal Horacio Diaz Herrera contaria con mas de 20 testigos a quienes tomara declararaciones como civiles en la llamada “Guerra Sucia” .
In this passage, we see how Horacio Diaz Herrero came back to the past in order to clarified and reveal what had been hidden during the Dirty War
Another interesting passage is the dialogue between Alberto Lombardo and Marcos Lombardo
Marcos “ ¿Vos sos medico de un centro clandestino?
Alberto “Vos te das cuenta que puedo ser el Blanco de Dias Herrero “
Marcos “No entiendo nada papá”.
Alberto” Por eso abandone la medicina . Yo tambien me sacrifique
Marcos ¿Vos te sacrificaste? ¿Para qué? , para TAPAR , PARA ESCAPARTE, PENSASTES QUE UN MARTIR PODRIA BORRAR UN ASESINO. “
Alberto “Yo nunca mate”.
Here , we can realize that the words that Marcos use has a crucial meaning , Tapar , Escaparte , are words that denote the period of dictatorship .
Horacio Diaz Herrera and Santiago
Santiago: ¿Esta implicado? ( He refered to Alberto Lombardo)
In 1976, victims included not just armed guerrilla fighters, whose organizations were virtually liquidated, but anyone believed to be associated with radical front groups, including trade-union members, students and people thought to hold left-wing views . Also, abducted women who were pregnant were kept captive in detention centers and military hospitals until the birth of their children, and then murdered shortly after delivery. Babies and young children of abducted individuals were also abducted, based on the assumption that subversives breed subversives.
In 1981 Videla retired and General Roberto Eduardo Viola replaced him, but nine months later, Viola stepped down for health reasons, and General Leopoldo Fortunato Galtieri who was arrested in late 1983 and charged in a military court with human rights violations during the "Dirty War".
In 1983 Democracy returned with Raul Alfonsín, who created the CONADEP (National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons) .His government prosecuted some members of the previous military regime for human rights abuses.
According to law , there is a human right abuses when :
· Arbitrary interference into personal, or private lives by agents of the state. (Article 12).
· Life, liberty or security of person are threatened. (Article 3)
From 1989 to 1999 President Carlos Saúl Menem was one of the most criticized because of the pardon he granted to Jorge Rafael Videla, Emilio Massera, Leopoldo Galtieri and other leaders of the National Reorganization Process (the 1976–1983 dictatorship), and some terrorist leaders as well, on the grounds of "national reconciliation"
Well, to start with I was a little confused by your use of 'the fact' in relation to the president so I googled him and found out that he was a 'de facto' president. This is a a common Latin phrase, but when you translate it into English it loses its meaning, so stay with 'de facto'. 'de facto' is universal and should not be translated into other languages.
