A sailor of Doria reported that he could see a ship seventeen miles away. They noticed that Stockholm was moving very quickly and heading directly toward them. Accordingly Doria´s radar, the ships could cross each other safely, but at 11:00 Captain Nordensen emerged from his cabin on the Stockholm to plot a new course. Minutes after that, Carstens-Johansen saw the Doria on radar. And he read information from the radar in a wrong way, inspite the most advanced radar technology, wich was manual, it required the user to set the radr to a particular scale. And his radar was mistankely set for 5 miles, than when he saw Doria on radar he believed that she was 12 miles away when actually she was only four miles away.
The struck happened, the hit opened such a gaping hole in the Doria´s side that within minutes the ship was leaning dangerously far to her right side.
And it sank in the following day.
