Could or Would

Hello,

She always cooks chicken; even if I don’t come over, but she presumes I could.

Is 'could' the right word to use or would 'would' be more suitable to express possibility.

  • No.
  • You're in the present tense, so you need 'will' or 'can'.
  • "but" seems out of place, and the idea that she presumes (assumes) you will come over even when she sees that you're not there doesn't really make a lot of sense.
  • And I don't see a connection between cooking chicken and coming over, so that's a mystery, too.

You may mean something like this:

She always cooks chicken when she thinks I'm coming over, even though I don't always turn up.
