Vocabulary

Could only be the work / for the mentally ill

Hi teachers,

The Brush strokes are bold, the paint is applied in heavy sweirls, and colors have a dramatic intensity rarely found in nature. Painted in 1889, a year before his death, Mountains at Saint-Remy could only be the work of van Gogh, then a patient in a French asylum for the mentally ill.

1. We understand that this painting was painted by van Gogh, what is "could only"?

2. In the text, does "for the mentally ill" modify "a French asylum", and not "a patient"?

Thank you.

Hi Avangi,

Thank you for showing me this way.

1. Just to check my understanding of "could only be".

Given that at the begining of the text the writer writes, "The brush strokes are bold (1), the paint is applied in heavy swirls(2), and thh colors have a dramatic intensity (3).

Does that mean "all three combined" it could only be the work of van Gogh?

Yes, that's what the author means to convey. Of course the reader may disagree with his conclusion.

I also have trouble distinguishing the comparsion.

I'm not sure what comparison you're referring to
