Could not swim well

Can I say,

Peter saw his friend drowning in the river. He was afraid because he could not/ did not swim well, so he shouted for help.

It was a sunny Sunday. Sam and Peter went fishing. They went to a river behind their house. They took fishing equipment with them.

Suddenly, Peter slipped at the riverbank and fell into the river. Peter started to drown because he does not know how to swim .
