Could never give

I posted my question in the Speech & Pronunciation Forum yesterday, but I haven't got any answer.

It was about the use of "give" in the sense of "understand" or something similar.

Do you think that it is possible?

I found the expression in the lyrics of a song of the thirties (the excerpt of the video where the girl uses "give" is posted in the other forum).

Lyrics:

MEN CHORUS: We have tried to keep a secret from you. On your way you get just what you do.
GIRL: Why you boys are happy? I could never give.
MEN CHORUS: It is just a story old that we must confess.

My doubts are related to the sentence "I could never give". Can "give" be used here in the sense of "understand" or "know" or "imagine"? If not, what does it mean in this context?

Hi, 'Give' makes no sense here. I think you have misheard. I'd listen, except I tried before and had trouble hearing.

I agree, Clive. For me "give" makes no sense in this sentence, That's why I asked for an alternate meaning. Notice that I've seen the short video a lot of times and I think that the girl says it clearly. And, furthermore, this is the only part of the song that has good sound! Maybe you could try again with the soundtrack posted in the other forum with a better luck. Thanks in advance.
