Could it be an appropriate question an answer?

Hi teachers,
Additonal infomation: Merrick can't walk very well. He needs help, but the doctor didnt realise it at first.
For a minute he stood by the door of the cab and said nothing. Then he hit the cab with his stick.
Merrick:‘STEPS!’ he said loudly. ‘Help me up the steps!’
Doctor: Then I understood. There were three steps up into the cab, and he could not get up them.

According to the context, could it be an appropriate question an answer?
Why Did Merrick hit the cab?
Because of the steps.

Also "He was exasperated." or "He was punctuating his petulant demand." or "He was in pain and wanted to hurt something, so he took it out on the cab." We don't know exactly why he hit the cab. He obviously could speak, so it wasn't to let the doctor know anything. Steps are not a reason. The author had him hit the cab to develop his character, and we are supposed to come away wondering why he wou
