Could it be a suitable explanation?

Hi teachers,
Could, 'Coke rapidly returned to the obscure / penumbra area of the front room' be an suitable explanation to the following sentence?
Coke quickly stepped back into the shadows of the front room.

Thanks in advance.

Í don't really understand what you mean by "suitable explanation". Are you given choices from which you are trying to choose one with the same meaning? Your sentences are synonymous, but that first one would be very unusual in everyday speech!

You're welcome, and good to hear! I only know "penumbra" from Astronomy. This is a little known word. Emotion: wink

Hi,
The word 'penunbra' is Spanish too.
Its origin is from Latin, paene ''almost + umbra 'shadow'.
Off Topic: Please do not think that I know a lot about it. I just took it from a dictionary.
