could have vs might have

Hello,
I don't hear "might have" used often and quite a lot of people say that it sounds odd. Here's an example:
- Where's your friend Jack gone?
- I saw him last week, but he could/might have gone on another vacation. He's an avid traveler, you know.

Is it actually odd to use "might have" in such contexts? The friend doesn't know where Jack is, so he thinks that Jack might have gone on another vacation.

No. It's quite common around here (California).
