Could collapse

Are these sentences correct:

1-I was walking very carefully because the bridge could collapse.

2-I was walking very carefully because the bridge might collapse.

(... there was a chance that the bridge might collapse)


2-We were not worried because the bridge couldn't collapse.

(... it was impossible that the bridge should collapse.)

(... there was a chance that the bridge might collapse) I can't call them wrong, but they sort of are. The reason for the care with which you walked is only obliquely revealed, and it sounds like the writer doesn't realize that.
