In recent years, the problem of traffic congestion have been receiving a great deal of public attention. While some people argue that national authorities should improve and expand the road system, I concur with those who believe that government investment in the construction of rail and subway networks will be much more effective to tackle this issue.

There are two primary reasons why government should provide funding for building more and wider roads. First, since people are having higher living standards compared to they were in the past, they have an inclination to use more private vehicles, especially cars, to travel. In fact, people live on the outskirts of the cities usually commute to work by cars, which means that building more roads will derive them from having more choices of the necessary routes.Second, by investing in road infrastructure, current system will be possible to deal with the growing volume of traffic. This means that the pressure of too many vehicles on certain roads will be relieved, which helps to ease the traffic flow in some peak times.

However, I agree with those who contend that officials should allocate resources to the construction of rail and subway networks. First, in order to cope with traffic congestion, national and local authorities could galvanize their citizens to use metro lines in lieu of private vehicles. Plenty of evidence suggests that trains are able to carry hundreds of passengers at the same time as well as speed up journey times, which helps relieve the density of passengers on public vehicles. Second, if more people use subway networks that are usually established seperatedly from crowded city areas, there will be less commuters on the road. This means that vehicles on the road can move more smoothly, which alleviate the current travelling overload.

In conclusion, although building more and wider roads can be an effective way to mitigate traffic congestion, I believe that investing in rail and metro lines will be a much more workable solution for this problem.
