Could anyone explain this to me please?

Multiple choice

Eventhough I didn't want my son to leave home, since he was twenty-one there was nothing I could do to..... it.

A. Hinder B. resist

C. prevent. D. Cease

Could I ask why the answer is C though answers A, C,D have similar meanings in OALD?

C. "prevent" means to stop completely, which is what the speaker seems to want to do. "Hinder" and "resist" are partial responses (they might slow it down, but not stop it).

You can cease doing an action (Will you cease complaining?) But you do not "cease" something.
