Could anyone clarify my uncertainties in this sentence?

I’m having trouble constructing sentences because I do not really know when to make nouns plural and add determiners. Could anyone clarify my uncertainties in the following sentences?

“The actual self is (the) conception of the self made up of the attributes that one thinks one actually has, whereas the ideal and ought selves are (the) conception(s) of the self (or selves?) made up of the attributes that one aspires to have and thinks one should have respectively.”

Decide if you want to use singular or plural before you start writing. Do not go back and forth doing one in singular and the other in plural. If you are talking about 3rd person singular, you will have the difficulty of having to put "he/she, him/her, his her." It quickly gets out of control. You have changed from singular "the self," and you also used "ought selves." Choose which you want. O
