What are the advantages and disadvantages of renting a home?

In recent years, an increasing number of people in some countries have opted to rent rather than purchase a house. Although there are several advantages of renting, there are also varied drawbacks.

There are two main benefits of renting a home. The first one is the location of the accomodation. Apartments and flats are usually situated in urban areas, where schools, industries and places of interests are easily accessible. For instance, a friend of mine decided to move from the country to the city and rent a flat near his work. Because of this decision, he no longer needs to commute to work and only walks to his office for five minutes everyday. The second advantages for people when renting a home is that it is actually cheaper than buying a house, especially in the city. An average flat in the city of Bangkok, for instance, can be rented for as low as $100 a month, while a small bungalow costs $1,000,000 to own. Thus, renting is the obvious choice of individuals who are financially challenged.

However, there are also disadvantages of renting. Obviously, renting will not result in ownership. In other words, no matter how long you stay in and pay for an apartment, it will not be yours. Another thing to consider is that many apartments are small and so the idea of living in a 100 square-foot condominium is not enticing for those who have a big family. Finally, most are located in crowded buildings and therefore, it is not ideal for some people, particularly the introverts.

In conclusion, many people would rather rent because apartments and flats offer convenience and are cheaper alternatives to purchasing a house, while some avoid houses for rent due to limited space and because most are located in densely populated communities.
