Could anybody correct these three sentences for me?

I actually think that simple present tense is better here ,as I saw many writers us this tense in there writing of the summary. But our teacher require us to us Simple past tense.

(1) A new role, Donald Farfrae appeared at that time and helped Henchard solve the problem about sprouted grain , and then he became the general manager and confidant.
(2) After meeting Susan secretly, Henchard and Susan/ them decided to remarry although Henchard had met Lucetta before.
(3) After a few events, Farfrae take over Henchard business and his position of major.

You can use either the present or past in recounting the plot of a work of fiction. Perhaps your teacher simply wanted you to practice using the simple past tense, so he made it a requirement. CJ
