Could anybody check my narrative?

Some day when the sun was shining, Kate and Jane decided to go on a bike ride. Having a good mood they were talking about irrelevant things. Suddenly, Kate noticed smell of smoke. After turning left, they saw a man calling for help, because his house was burning.
Coming nearer to the house Kate tried to unlock the door, but she didn't manage it. Then Jane spotted that a ladder was standing behind the fence, so she went to borrow it and put it by the wall. Being scared, she climbed the ladder and helped the man to go out of alighting house.
As an accolade for Kate's and Jane's bravery the community of the town awarded them and threw a party in honour of them.
But during the party there was something amiss, something in the air and Kate felt it. All of the sudden a masked man with a gun in his hand popped down to the hall and started to shout and shoot. A panickly feeling came over everybody. But the worst was still to come. The man pointed at Kate and squeezed the tigger. The bullet flew directly into Kate. As she dropped down on the floor, Jane straight off called an ambulance. The man disappeared, but nobody cared about it because one of their heroines had been dangerously shot.
Finally, the ambulance got through and from that forward Kate's life was in the doctors' hands.
