Essay & Composition Writing

Could anybody check my IELTS writing, please?

Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are they key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be very effective in improving road safety. Discuss these both views and give your opinion.

The issue of road accidents is so head-splitting for governments as it can cost lives and affect citizens’ well-being. Therefore, in my view, implementation of both penalties and other measure would be effective in promoting road safety.

On the one hand, strict punishments would reduce traffic violation, a major cause of fatal accidents. Penalties can make road users less likely to purposely offend traffic law as they tend to be reluctant in paying fine, having their licenses suspended, dealing with policeman or even serving prison sentences. Strict punishments can prevent people from future violation. For example, in Vietnam, violators not wearing helmets when riding motorbikes must pay a fine of around 150.000 VND which is just as much as the income per day of an average worker. Thus, not wanting to lavish the money, these people would abide by the law next time they hit the road.

On the other hand, other measures prove to be efficient in reducing the rate of unwanted traffic accidents. First, to make traffic laws at citizens’ command, authorities should provide programs or courses in schools or as parts of driving tests, promoting people’s awareness of the regulations. It would be also encouraging if governments hold competitions on knowledge of traffic laws and then grant participants with rewarding prizes. Second, besides law education, road infrastructures are factors that should receive investments from the governments. Road bumps, pedestrian crossings, warning signs should be added more on the road to make drivers more alerted of hazards ahead. Moreover, authorities should examine the conditions of these infrastructures frequently as they tend to be damaged or out of order after being long exposed to weather conditions and other factors.

In conclusion, I believe that the combination of strict punishments and other methods is ideal to reduce road tolls and guarantee road users’ safety.
