could and can

Hello dear teachers,
Could you help me understand the difference in the meaning(s) of the following sentences, please ?
Here are the sentences;
" I COULD be happy if everything happened as I have planned."

" I CAN be happy if everything happens as I have planned. "

Which one of the above sentences, according to you, is more appropriate ? In what context / situation would you use one or the other ?
