Could

Hi,

In the following dialogues, is the word " COULD" used for asking a question in a polite way? Is it right?

A: You are out of control.

B: Well, good morning to you.

A: How COULD you be so reckless? David is back in the papers because of your sloppy clean-up job.

B: There was nothing sloppy about it. They will never be able to trace it back to us.

A: I was in the building when killed him.

B: That simply bad timing.

A: He would've signed those papers.

B: Well, now he does need to. Jane Doe ties us to daylight. I have done my job and now you do yours.

Thank you

No. It is accusatory. It accuses the listener of having been reckless. It seems from the context that the act of recklessness has already occurred, so it should actually be How could you have been so reckless? Nevertheless, people sometimes make that substitution.CJ
