Could

Hello,

Is it okay to say: I am hoping you could do that. Or must it always be 'can' since it is present tense?

b) He did not feel compelled to do it.
Is this okay?

c) using neither: He could remember neither the time nor the date.
Is that okay, or must it be without the article, that is, neither time nor date.

d) in light of: I know this idiom, but is it always 'in light of' or are there places where we must use it with an article ... in (the) light of?

Thanks,

Anonymous Is it okay to say: I am hoping you could do that. Or must it always be 'can' since it is present tense? I believe it's correct to use "could" for a polite request in the present.
