Cotton?

The boy and the slave huddle together under the sheltering cottonwoods, and Huck Finn slowly learns that he respects, and loves, Jim. Here, at least "cotton" and slavery are friends.

What can "cotton" imply in the above sentence? Is it cottonwood, or Huck Finn, or a white person?

Thanks in advance!

Just a literal meaning and no implication.

Hi,
I'd say it refers to Huck, based on the underlying idea that white people like Huck are the owners of the cotton in the South.

Clive.
