Cosmetic surgery is gaining / gains in popularity every year.

Hello,

recently I have encountered the following sentence:

1) Cosmetic surgery is gaining in popularity every year.

And I wonder if it is correct. The Present Continuous time has the three basic meanings listed here http://www.englishpedia.net/my-grammar/present-continuous-tense/present-continuous-time-expressions.html, and I am not sure if any fits here. Maybe Use 3 as here we have something that happens constantly?

2) Cosmetic surgery gains in popularity every year.

Does this sentence sound better in this case?

Informally used in the sense of #3 in your reference. "Every year" is used to mean "year after year."
