Corriander VS Cilantro

Hi.
Are corriander the same as cilantro?
The Longman dictionary introduces them as synonymous, and defines the cilantro as an American version of corriander. (http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/cilantro )
But living in America for a while, I have the impression that, cilantro can be found in the herb section and corriander in the spice section.
If cilantro is American, why is the British version used when we are talking about spices.
Thank you very much

The coriander you find in the spice section is likely to be the seeds (whole or ground) of the plant. Cilantro refers exclusively to the leaves.
