Correlative conjunctions

Hi there

I have an interesting grammar question.

The solution to 10 down in the crossword puzzle can be ........... "solemn" ............. "severe" as the word, while beginning with "s", must only have seven letters in it.

A neither / nor
B both / and
C either / or
D not only / but

If you ask me I would choose option A. But what makes other options wrong? I'm not sure.
