correlative conjunction

Hi people i am teaching a class of advanced esl students and they ask lots of awkward questions.:/
Would you mind looking at this sentence
'Your dog was so thirsty that he drank all the water'
*is 'so' and 'that' correlative in this context?
*If i replace 'that' for a comma, how would it change things? and what would that make 'so'?
* Finally which clause is dependent, 'Your dog was so thirsty' or 'that he drank all of the water'

I would love to get your opinions
thanks Fred

That would be an error. A comma should never substitute that. You could, however, omit that without changing the meaning: Your dog was so thirsty he drank
