Correctness of use of 'THE' before a nationality based noun

Hi
Which of these usage is correct.
He was an emninent activist of American independence movement
Or
He was an eminent activist of the American independence movement.
I personally feel 1st usage is correct

Only the second is correct. It is the head noun "movement" that governs the use of the article. It dosn't have much to do with "American".

Neither of them sounds particularly natural to me. I would use for rather than of. I would follow it with a definite article.
