correctness of this article use

Hi,

1. Does the article 'a' suppose to go with the words 'war' and 'competition'? I believe they are variable nouns.If the distinction is blurry, how would you tell?

A victory is a success in a struggle, war, or competition.

Would this be correct too? If I take out the article before 'success'?

A victory is success in a struggle, war, or competition.

2. Can we put the indefinte article before a word that is meant to represent only one? the phrase 'a soverign God' sounds correct but 'a God' after that? Can I use this in any context, a XXX Street or a XXX Stadium?
