Correctness of a sentence

Hi, I am having a little problem with this sentence:

Everyone of us has understood that without his helping us we would not have succeeded.

Is that sentence correct? I know I've read sentences with structures like that one before but I'd like to know the rule that makes it right.

Thanks!

Yes, it's right. 'Without' is a preposition which requires a noun head, and '-ing' is a verb form used as a noun here.
