Correction of sentence

I wrote " what is the time by your watch "
Another friend of mine says that it is an incorrect sentence , he says the correct english would be " what is the time in your watch " . which i dont agree , Kindly let me know who is correct grammatically and as per construction of the particular sentence .

Your friend is terribly, terribly wrong in using 'in'. 'By' is the usual, but 'on' is also common.
