In 1795, after the French Revolution, France was ruled by a Five Man Directory. It was proved to be weak, corrupt and ineffective. He reorganized France, he allowed religious freedom in which ended the government persecution of Roman Catholic Clergy, and he also introduced reforms to wherever the French army went.
Under Napoleon’s leadership, the French government created the Code of Napoleon, a set of laws applied to all France. The Code emphasized right to people, such as trial by jury, equality for all men, but, however, women had fewer rights than they had had during the French Revolution. On the negative side, he was a dictator. He didn’t allow freedom of speech. Moreover, his ambitious led to death of millions of Europeans.

Germany had been divided into many different states for many centuries. From 1807 to 1812, Napoleon of France raided German lands, the feeling of nationalism stirred in those who fought French rule. Over time, Prussia rose to become more powerful, leading this move was prime minister Otto Von Bismarck. He was a master of “realpolitik” – tough power politics.
Otto Von Bismarck was appointed chancellor in 1862. He wanted to unite the Germany states under King William of Prussia. However, he was not driven by nationalism, but his goal was to make Prussia the master of German. Bismarck followed a policy he called “Blood and Iron”. This policy was to achieve one goal, and that was the unification of German.
In 1864, Prussia joined with Austria to take control of lands from Denmark. Soon in 1866, Bismarck turned against Austria to gain even more territory. Other German states formed a new confederation, and it was controlled by Prussia alone. Bismarck’s next step was to win the support of the remaining German states in the south. He conspire a plot which angered a weak France to declare war on Prussia.
When Prussia won the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, Bismarck reached his goal. The war with France gave the southern German states a nationalist feeling. Therefore, they joined the other states in naming the King of Prussia as emperor, or Kaiser. Bismarck not only unified German, he also made Germany became one of the strongest power in Europe.
