Correction of a sentence

"Meanwhile, as we were waiting for the train, we talked about what we are going to do at Christmas."

Is this sentence correct?

Could I use "we were talking" instead of the present simple tense?

Could I use "while or when" instead of "as"?

Thanks in advance.

what we are going to do at Christmas.
This implies that Christmas has not arrived at the time your sentence is spoken.

It also implies that the conversation happened in the recent past.
