Correcting mistakes in the review of "To Kill a Mockingbird"
Hello. Tomorrow in the English lesson I would speak about book "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. This is what I'm going to say, and I would be really grateful, if some of you help me to correct mistakes.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by American writer Harper Lee. It was published in 1960. The book was very successful, and it is being called classic now. Author of this book tells a story not only about two children – a brother and a sister, about their father and Maycomb, the town where they live. She tells a story about childhood and growing up, about prejudice and racial injustice and about death of innocence. She talks about life laws, written and unwritten.
The story is set in fictional town Maycomb in Alabama, South of USA, during three years of the Great Depression. The story begins in summer, when boy, Dill Harris, comes to the town. The main characters, Jeremy and Jean Louise, often called Scout, make friends with him and children decide to make neighbour Boo Radley come out. That is caused by stories which they heard – that Arthur Radley is imprisoned in his own home, eats only squirrels and cats and gets out only at night. Children try some different ways, but Boo Radley stays at home.
In the second part of book, there is a story about black man Tom Robinson, who is accused of raping a young white woman. Atticus Finch, the father of Jem and Scout, becomes lawyer of Tom, and that is the cause of forthcoming events, when other pupils mock at Jem and Scout, and most of the people of town, even some relatives, are set against Atticus. He manages to convince of Tom Robinson innocence, but he is being sentenced to anyway. Jem and Scout learn, the hard way, that the justice not always is practicable.
The character about whom I really want to tell you more is Atticus Finch. Physically, he is just a middle-aged, tall man with glasses to correct his weak eyesight. But he is a perfect example of good father, as he is strict, but never hits his children; he tries to do his best, and does everything to grow his children into conscientious people. Also he is a good lawyer, since he is fair and he stands for what he believes, no matter what is other people opinion. While other inhabitants of Maycomb consider black people inferior, he treats them as equals. Atticus is an authority to Jem and Scout, and in my opinion, he can be authority to each and everyone.
I like this book a lot, because it teaches us some really important things and it implants great values. I read it twice – the first time was before about four years, in Lithuanian, and the second time – now, in English. I am happy that I read it in the source language, because then it is punchier, even if sometimes I found it difficult to understand slang. What I want to say in conclusion, that To Kill a Mockingbird is well worth reading and I would honestly recommend it to everyone.
Thanks! Yours respectfully, Dominyka
