Correcting a few sentences

Hi,

Could you correct the following sentences, if needed?

1. When I was lurching down the street in a drunken daze I was thinking of what I would say to police if they stopped me

2. When I was lurching down the street in a drunken daze I though that I should've picked a different street because of the police officer standing leisurely at the next traffic light.

I'm particularly concerned with my tense choice, but if you checked the whole sentences it would be great. Emotion: smile

(and one more thing: please, don't be put off by the meaning of the sentences, they have no bearing on any real-life situation)

Thanks !
