CORRECT WORD USAGE

Hello,I have a doubt regarding using a particular word in a sentence,could some one please help me to make a correct sentence.

There was a project handled by a person,he left the job and took over the project.how should i make the sentence

Is this correct: I took the project in the middle(or) Mid because he left the job..please guide me which word is suitable for the above sentence,if both are wrong,kindly make a new sentence for the same
