Please help me with the following:

The Johns bought a house and have/had moved in.

Which verb should I use and what is the difference?

If they have recently moved in, then use "have."

If they moved in, and then something else happened, use "had."

They had moved in just before his mother came to live with them.

If you want to talk about something that happened after they moved in, use "had." All on its own, use "have."

As GG says, had doesn't work in that sentence.
You can say 'have moved in' or you could also say this:
The Johns bought a house and moved in.
