Correct use of the modal "could"?

Hi. Is this correct use of the modal "could"? Is this an example of its use as a past of the modal "can"? If it is, can you give me one more example of the like of this?

As I came home, I could smell something burning. The meat was all burned up. Obviously, it couldn't stand the heat.
