Correct use of "like"

Hi. Is this correct? I thought you needed a noun or a pronoun after the word "like," if I wasn't mistaken. Thank you in advance for your help.

He heard news like he left town suddenly last Saturday.

Is that a sentence that you wrote, or did you read it somewhere? I find it a bit awkward to read. I interpret it as meaning that that he 1 heard news that consisted of information such as "he 2 left town suddenly last Saturday", where the two "he"s refer to different people.
